The idea of opening a movie theatre was conceptualized in the mid 70's but to finally channelise it and for the idea to take shape commenced in late 1979. it was completed on 15th August 1983. The inauguration was on the 16th August. The first movie that was screened was 'Kranti'. The total capacity then was 1325 now its 1014. The Dolby Sound system was installed in November 99.

Construction of Denzong Cinema started during the year 1960. It was inaugurated on 12th September, 1962 by the then His Highness, Chogyal Sir Tashi Namgyal. The first movie that was screened was Amardeep( B/W) casting Dilip Kumar and Vaijanthi Mala. It has capacity of 790 seats X 3 classes. Denzong Cinema was revamped and refurbished and fully modernized during the year 1999-2000. It was upgraded and equipped with the latest Dolby Digital Surrounded Ex-Audio system and it is the now the fourth of its kind in India.
