 BOOKS

The first ever book devoted solely to the former independent kingdom of Sikkim, now a state of India, was published on July 3, 2003 by Pomegranate Press in the UK. 'Sikkim Himalaya - Travels in the Cloud Kingdom' is a 200-page full colour hard cover title by David Lang, who has written six previous books, including 'A Guide to the Orchids of Great Britain and Ireland', 'The Complete Book of British Berries' and 'The Wild Flower Finder's Calendar'.

In this unique celebration of Sikkim's history, geography, flora and fauna, David Lang writes evocative and beautifully illustrated accounts of four eventful treks he made in the mountainous northern parts of the country - exploring valleys which no western botanist had visited since Joseph Hooker 150 years before, and travelling in the steps of the Younghusband Expedition of 1903-4. The book also includes attractive maps and a specially commissioned article on the forest orchids of Sikkim by Mohan Pradhan. There are 330 colour photographs and an archive of historic black and white pictures never seen outside Sikkim before.

A mountainous country of incredible beauty and abundant wildlife, Sikkim is home to three distinct peoples, the Lepchas, Bhutias and Nepali. Its snow-covered peaks, flower-filled meadows and gorgeously decorated Buddhist temples remain unknown even to many who live within easy reach of its borders.

'Sikkim Himalaya' (254mm x 254mm; ISBN 09533493-7-3) is published in the UK at £29.95. The book is delivered free of post & packing within the UK from Pomegranate Press, Dolphin House, 51 St Nicholas Lane, Lewes, Sussex BN7 2JZ. Retail terms are 35 per cent, and 25 per cent for single orders.
